Reps Lasses Tinubu’s N58.18trn 2026 Budget For 2nd Reading
The House of Representatives has approved 2026 Appropriation Bill of N58.18 trillion for second reading designed to consolidate macroeconomic stability, strengthen national security and expand capital investment.
The approval followed the presentation of the bill’s framework by the Leader of the House, Julius Ihonvbere during Thursday’s plenary.
Speaking on the general principles of the budget, Ihonvbere told the House that the Tinubu administration inherited “distorted and disarticulated institutions” and cautioned against expecting painless reforms.
He cited key macroeconomic indicators to justify support for the budget, including a 3.98 percent economic growth rate ahead of the 2026 fiscal year, a drop in inflation to 14.45 percent from about 25 percent, improved revenues, export growth, and expanded foreign direct investment.
The House considered and adopted several Matters of Urgent Public Importance including the urgent to address the escalating poverty and hunger in Nigeria, with Special Focus on Agricultural Recovery in the North-East moved by Khadija Bukar.
Another motion on the need to investigate alleged discriminatory practices in the recruitment of resident doctors by the Chief Medical Director of the University of Calabar Teaching Hospital was moved by Igariwey Iduma Enwo from Ebonyi state.
Earlier, the house held a valedictory session in honour of Dr. Danzaria Yahaya, the Clerk of the House, who is retiring after years of active service.
The Speaker Tajudeen Abbas the Clerk for his professionalism, integrity and commitment to legislative service.
During the session, lawmakers across party lines paid glowing tributes to Dr. Yahaya, describing him as a humble, dedicated and result-oriented public servant, who consistently attended to both official duties and personal concerns with diligence.
The house later adjourned plenary to Tuesday, 17th February 2026 following a motion moved by the House Leader, Honourable Julius Ihonvbere.
