Four Policemen Feared Killed as Gunmen Attack Area Command in Anambra
Four policemen have been reported killed during an attack by gunmen on the Police Area Command in Nnewi, Anambra State.
The attack which occurred on Monday was alleged to have been carried out by suspected members of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB).
The spokesman for the Anambra State Police Command, Tochukwu Ikenga, told newsmen that his office had yet to receive a detailed report on the incident. He, however, said that the police battled the assailants and warded them off.
According to sources, the gunmen stormed the Police Area Command on Monday afternoon and engaged the security operatives in a fierce gunfight. #
PDP Crisis: I Am Going Nowhere, Secondus Vows
National Chairman of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) Prince Uche Secondus on Monday maintained his ground that he won’t resign from his position, saying he has done nothing wrong to be forced out of office.
Secondus’ insistence on completing his tenure by December this year is coming against the backdrop of calls by nine members of the National Working Committee (NWC) and a youth group for his resignation as PDP national chairman.
As of Monday, Secondus’ fate was still hanging in the balance as the meeting of PDP governors, which lasted over six hours, failed to provide a clear indication about the political destiny of the embattled national chairman who was invited by the governors to brief them on the crisis rocking the party. #
Usifo Ataga’s death: Court remands Chidinma
A Yaba magistrates’ court in Lagos on Monday, ordered the remand of Chidinma Ojukwu, the prime suspect in the death of Super TV CEO, Usifo Ataga, for 30 days in prison.
Chief Magistrate Adeola Adedayo gave the order following a remand application by the police prosecutor, Cyril Ejiofor. The application was in accordance with Section 264, subsections 1 and 2 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State.
Recall that Chidinma, a 300-level student of the University of Lagos, was arrested on June 23 for the murder of Usifo and confessed to having stabbed him several times, stole from him and left him in an apartment where they lodged in Lekki.
Miss Ojukwu and a co-defendant in the case, Quadri Adedapo, would be on remand till September 5 for the review of remand and legal advice from the Directorate of Public Prosecution. #
Indonesia apologises to Nigeria over manhandling of Nigerian Dilpomat in Jakarta
The Federal Government of Nigeria through the Ministry of Foreign Affairs has protested strongly to the government of Indonesia over the arrest and maltreatment of a Nigerian diplomat in front of his apartment in the Indonesian capital of Jakarta.
The Government in a Statement issued from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs described the incident where the diplomat was manhandled as unacceptable, against International Law and a contravention of the Vienna Convention governing diplomatic and Consular relations between States.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs said it has invited the Indonesian Ambassador to Nigeria who has apologized unreservedly to the Federal Government on behalf of the Indonesian government while also explaining what went wrong.
The Immigration officials concerned have also been to the Nigerian embassy to apologise to the Nigerian ambassador to Indonesia and the concerned diplomat according to the Nigerian ambassador to Indonesia. #
Bayelsa Plans Public Holiday, Reception for Victorious Teams
The Bayelsa government on Monday declared that Bayelsa Queens and Bayelsa United football clubs would be given a rousing welcome to the state to celebrate their victory at the Aiteo Cup.
Recalling that Bayelsa Queens defeated FC Robo Queens of Lagos 4-2, while Bayelsa United triumphed 4-3 on penalty shootouts against Nasarawa United after both teams battled to a thrilling 2-2 draw in regulation time.
Gov. Douye Diri, disclosed that a public holiday would also be declared in their honour. He made this statement at their camp in Benin City, shortly after their victories in the tournament.
The two teams Bayelsa Queens and Bayelsa United emerged as Champions of the Men and Women’s Aiteo Cup on Sunday in Benin City. #
