STAKEHOLDERS WARN MOTORISTS AGAINST RECKLESS DRIVING AS HEAVY TRAFFIC RETURNS TO URBAN CENTRES – WATCH VIDEO
As urban dwellers return to their places of domicile and businesses, traffic volumes are building up again in major cities of the country raising concerns over reckless driving and avoidable road crashes.
This has brought about renewed calls for motorists, especially commercial drivers, to exercise restraint and prioritise human life on the roads
As Nigerians gradually return to their daily routines after the festive season, roads across the major streets in the country are once again witnessing increased human and vehicular movement.
This development has renewed concerns over reckless driving, overspeeding and disregard for traffic rules by some motorists.
The Chairman of the National Union of Road Transport Workers, NURTW, Jabi Park Branch, Comrade Gbenga Owolabi cautioned road users, particularly commercial drivers, to avoid dangerous driving habits that could endanger lives.
Owolabi noted that many road accidents recorded during and after festive periods are preventable, stressing that human life remains sacred and irreplaceable.
He urged drivers to embrace self-discipline, patience and strict adherence to traffic regulations, adding that no journey is worth risking one’s life or that of passengers.
According to him, commercial drivers must understand that they have a responsibility not only to make profit, but to ensure the safety of those they convey on a daily basis.
The Abuja Regional Manager of a Mass Transit Company, Dr. Kehinde Olanrewaju noted that road safety goes beyond careful driving. He called on the Federal Government to tackle insecurity on highways with renewed seriousness, noting that Nigerians expect more proactive action from the Tinubu administration to guarantee safe and seamless transportation across the country.
Olanrewaju further advised motorists to ensure that their vehicles are in good mechanical condition before embarking on any journey, stressing the importance of regular maintenance and professional checks. He also encouraged drivers to avoid night journeys where possible and to remain alert at all times while on the road.
As the roads continue to get busier, motorists are expected to combine caution with responsibility, ensuring that speed limits are observed and traffic rules strictly followed.
