UNN TAKES BOLD STEPS TO SAVE IGBO LANGUAGE AND CULTURE FROM EXTINCTION
The Centre for Igbo Studies at the University of Nigeria, Nsukka has declared its commitment to ensure that Igbo language and culture do not go into extinction.
The centre gave the assurance on Tuesday during a press conference held in Enugu to announce the 2nd World Igbo Conference scheduled to hold Friday, April 12 and Saturday Aril 13, 2024, at the University of Nigeria, Nsukka.
The Director, Center for Igbo Studies and convener of the World Igbo conference, Prof. Chris Agbedo, disclosed that the conference with the theme, “Bridging the Igbo Homeland-Diaspora Disconnect for transforming our present and future together,” would explore various aspects of Igbo culture, language, heritage, and socio-economic development.
The Center, which blamed parents for the poor knowledge of the mother tongue among children, said it has taken a bold step to ensure that the Igbo language, culture and tradition do not die.
While calling on Igbo parents to bring up their children with their mother tongue Agbedo said it was very dangerous to bring up a child with English language.
The 2nd World Igbo Conference aims to explore various aspects of Igbo culture, language, heritage, and socio-economic development.
It will feature discussions on five associated themes crucial to the Igbo community, including Igbo language development, Igbo Cultural Village Complex, economic empowerment, historical reconnection and policy and advocacy.
It will offer a unique platform for scholars, researchers, policymakers, and community leaders to engage in meaningful dialogue, exchange ideas, and chart a path for the advancement of the Igbo people worldwide.
