An international Relations expert and Chief Executive Officer of SignatureTV, VinMartin Obiora Ilo says the opposition of the United States of America to the emergence of Dr. Ngozi Okonjo Iweala of Nigeria as the consensus Director-General of the World Trade Organization WTO, is a reflection of the US’s contempt for the rest of the world, especially under the Trump presidency.
Obiora Ilo who was speaking on the Radio Nigeria 7 O’clock news interview on Thursday morning, said the US opposition may force the WTO to resort to voting on November 9, when the organization reconvenes, a practice which has not happened in the 25 years history of the organization.
He said however that WTO may be forced to delay the election of a director formal until the outcome of the US election is known. This may be in anticipation that the US election could produce a president who may be disposed to speed the consensus practice of the WTO in choosing a director-general.
Mr Obiora Ilo said that if Dr Okonjo Iweala emerged as the DG of the WTO, it would improve multi-literalism, reform international trade, and patents which will enhance favourable distribution of drugs and critical lifesaving vaccines especially in this era of Covid 19
He said that her election as the WTO DG would provide opportunities for developing countries including Nigeria to push for more free and equitable trade.
