2023 elections: INEC clears air on voter registration in Niger Republic
The Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, Mahmood Yakubu has refuted reports that the commission is operating polling units in the Niger Republic.
Yakubu insisted that the Nigerian constitution does not allow the conduct of elections outside Nigeria’s territory.
Reports have it that the Nigerian electoral umpire has been registering voters in some parts of the neighbouring country.
However, the Chief Press Secretary to Yakubu, Rotimi Oyekanmi, described such reports as baseless. ##
Gunmen Kidnap Two Catholic Priests in Edo
Gunmen have kidnapped two Catholic priests in Edo State, amid the continued abduction of clergymen in the country.
Police authorities in the state have confirmed the incident which occurred on Saturday night around Ehor and Iruekpen communities along the Benin-Auchi Expressway.
In a statement on Sunday, the Police Public Relations Officer in Edo, Chidi Nwabuzor, identified the victims as Reverend Father Udo Peter of St. Patrick’s Catholic Church, Uromi, and Reverend Father Philemon Oboh of St. Joseph Retreat Centre, Ugboha in Esan South East Local Government Area (LGA) of the state.
According to him, the Commissioner of Police Edo, Abutu Yaro, has dispatched security operatives to the area with a view to rescuing the clergymen and arresting the kidnappers. #
Zamfara: Gov. Matawalle flags off Community Protection Guards
The Governor of Zamfara State, Bello Matawalle has boasted that he is very much ready to ensure total elimination of bandits troubling the entire State.
The Governor stated this at the flag-off of training of his newly recruited Community Protection Guards (CPG), pointing out that nobody would prevent him from forming a formidable force to counter the bandits.
He noted that the Guards in the State would move towards implementing new Security measures that could deal decisively with the bandits ravaging the State. ##
Insecurity: I Never Asked Christians To Buy Guns – Adeboye
The General Overseer of the Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG), Pastor Enoch Adeboye, says he never asked Christian faithful to purchase guns to defend themselves.
The clergyman made the clarification following earlier comments on the killing of worshippers in Ondo State by terrorists who invaded Saint Francis Xavier Catholic Church, Owo.
It was reported that at least 40 worshippers who had gone for the Sunday mass on June 5 lost their lives to the church attack. ##
