ASUU opts for one-month warning strike – Source

A reliable source at the just concluded National Executive Council (NEC) meeting of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) says the union has resolved to embark on a one-month comprehensive strike to compel the Nigerian government to comply to their request

According to the source, who was part of the meeting, the union took the decision reluctantly despite interventions by many prominent Nigerians.

He said the decision was to save Nigeria’s university system considering what he described as the deteriorating state of Nigerian universities.

 

PDP Victory In FCT Council Polls, Good Omen -Ayu

The National Chairman of Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Senator Iyorcha Ayu, has described the party’s victory in the just-concluded Federal Capital Territory (FCT) council polls, as a good motivation that will spur the party to win the 2023 presidential election.

It was reported that PDP won three area councils, that is, Abuja Municipal Area Council (AMAC), Kuje and Bwari, while All Progressives Congress (APC) won Gwagwalada, Kwali and Abaji.

Dedicating the victory to PDP governors, National Executive Committee (NEC), National Working Committee (NWC) and millions of party members, Ayu, in a statement said the promise of a better Nigeria has just been flagged off by the victory at the FCT polls of Saturday, February 12.

 

20 Abducted Victims Regain Freedom In Niger, Police Kill Several Bandits

Twenty abducted persons in Niger State have regained their freedom after the police in Niger State raided a bandits’ hideout at Anaba hilltop, Magama Local Government Area of the state.

The Police Public Relations Officer, Niger State Command, DSP Wasiu Abiodun disclosed this in a statement on Sunday.

Abiodum explained that at about 16:30 pm on Saturday, February 12, the armed bandits attacked some villages around Nasko, Magama LGA and rustled a large number of cattle.

But after a fierce gun battle with military personnel, several of the bandits were killed and the cattle were recovered.

Other items recovered at the scene included: one AK-47 magazine with 30 rounds of live ammunition, seven handsets, one Honda motorcycle.

 

 Reps to invite ministers, NNPC, others in refineries, fuel consumption probe

The House of Representatives Ad Hoc Committee on the State of Refineries in Nigeria is billed to invite top Federal Government officials, regulators, marketers, workers’ unions, oil companies, and other stakeholders in the petroleum sector in its investigation of the inability of the country to refine its crude oil.

According to reliable sources in the committee, those who have been penciled down to appear before the committee include: the Minister of Finance, Budget and National Planning, Zainab Ahmed; Minister of Justice and Attorney-General of the Federation, Abubakar Malami (SAN); and Minister of State for Petroleum Resources, Timipre Sylva.

Also on the list are the Accountant-General of the Federation, Ahmed Idris; Auditor-General of the Federation, Adolphus Aghughu; and the Director-General, Budget Office, Ben Akabueze.

Officials of the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited, Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Authority, Nigerian Upstream Petroleum Regulatory Commission, Warri Refining and Petrochemical Company Limited, Kaduna Refining and Petrochemical Company Limited, Port Harcourt Refining Company Limited, Dangote Refinery, and all licensed modular refineries, among others, will also appear before the panel.

 

Ukraine Vows To Keep Airspace Open Despite Russia Threat

Ukraine on Sunday vowed to keep its airspace open to international travel despite Western warnings that Russian troops conducting drills near its borders could invade at any point.

The Dutch carrier KLM on Saturday became the first major airline to indefinitely suspend flights to the former Soviet republic because of the rising risks.

Ukraine’s budget airline SkyUp said on Sunday that its flight from Portugal to Kyiv was forced to land in Moldova because the plane’s Irish leasing company had revoked permission for it to cross into Ukraine.

SkyUP added that European leasing companies were demanding that Ukrainian airlines return their planes to EU airspace within 48 hours.
