ASUU set to shut down public varsities, declares lecture-free day

The Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, says it will soon shut down all academic activities in public universities over the inability of the Federal Government to implement agreements it entered with the union in December 2020, which led to the suspension of a nine-month prolonged strike.

Twelve months after the industrial action was suspended, ASUU has accused the Federal Government of failing to fulfil its side of the agreement and threatened to mobilise for another strike immediately.

The ASUU National President, Prof. Emmanuel Osedeke while briefing journalists, said there would be a lecture-free day in some branches on Monday to enable members have urgent meetings.

 

PDP Cautions Matawalle Over Impeachment Misadventure

The People’s Democratic Party (PDP) has cautioned the Zamfara State Governor, Bello Matawalle, for allegedly inducing the State House of Assembly to commence the process of impeaching a democratically elected Deputy Governor of Zamfara State, Mahdi Aliyu Mohammed Gusau.

According to the PDP, the process of impeachment despite a subsisting order of the Federal High Court, Abuja portends grave implication for peace and security not only in Zamfara State but the entire North West region as well as the continued sustenance of democracy in Nigeria

The party through its spokesman, Hon. Debo Ologunagba said it is clear that the panic move by Governor Matawalle is induced by his realization that the mandate of the PDP, which he stole away into the APC, is on the verge of being recovered through the legal processes of the court and restored to the deputy governor.

The party called on President Muhammadu Buhari and the APC to immediately call Governor Matawalle to order and ensure that the action is halted forthwith.

 

Rent: Senate Bill Seeks 3-Month Jail, N1m Fine For Defaulting Landlords

The Senate has prescribed a three-month jail term or N1million fine for offenders in the bill seeking to regulate house rent in the Federal Capital Territory.

The proposed law, sponsored by Senator Smart Adeyemi (APC, Kogi), passed second reading on the floor of the Senate last week.

The bill seeks to protect low-income earners from any form of oppression by homeowners as well as provide a safety net for landlords against erring tenants.

The bill bars landlords from demanding a fresh tenant, rent in excess of three months.

It also bars the tenant from offering to pay rent in excess of three months in case he or she is securing the use of the apartment for the first time.

In case of termination of the agreement, the bill prescribes a one-month notice to a tenant paying rents on a monthly basis and a three-month notice to a tenant paying on a quarterly basis.

The bill forbids arbitrary increases of rent and gives the courts the powers to determine reasonable rent increments.

 

Senior Secondary Commission To Retrain Teachers

The Executive Secretary, Senior Secondary Education Commission, Dr Benjamin Abakpa, says the commission will retrain senior secondary school teachers to in line with international best practices.

He said this was to enable the teachers to undertake the task of equipping the students with adequate skills for nation-building.

He said this when the management of the National Mathematical Centre paid him a visit. He stressed the need for teachers’ adequate training to re-position the senior secondary education with a view to meeting societal needs.

Abakpa charged the Mathematics Centre to brace up with the challenge of laying the right foundation for teaching Mathematics in senior secondary schools and ensure Mathematics teachers are adequately trained.

Senegal for the first time in the tournament has won the African Cup of Nations after Sunday’s final with Egypt after a goalless draw at the end of ninety minutes.
