Stop Embarrassing Judicial Officers, CJN Warns Security Agencies

The Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN), Justice Tanko Muhammad, on Wednesday, warned security operatives against embarrassing judicial officers, adding that the judiciary would not take kindly if there is a repeat of any ugly treatment from security operatives. 

The CJN, while speaking during a special session of the Supreme Court to mark the commencement of the 2021/2022 legal year of the Supreme Court and the inauguration of the 72 newly appointed Senior Advocates of Nigeria (SAN), warned that the silence of the judiciary should never be mistaken for weakness. 

According to him, the silence of the judiciary should never be mistaken for stupidity or weakness, stating that they are conservative but not conquered species and should not be pushed further than this by any individual, institution or agency of the government. 

 

Uzodimma receives Kingsley Mbadiwe University certificate

Governor Hope Uzodimma has received a letter of recognition of the Kingsley Mbadiwe University, Ogboko in Imo State from the National University Commission (NUC).

The brief handover ceremony took place Wednesday at the NUC office in Abuja, where the executive secretary of the NUC, Prof. Adamu Rasheed, lauded Governor Uzodimma’s doggedness and commitment in the pursuit of quality education for the people of Imo State.

Governor Uzodimma thanked the NUC for facilitating the issuance of the letter and promised that government will do everything to ensure that the university will be among the sought-after higher institutions in the country. 

 

FEC okays N965.9m operational vehicles for Nigeria Correctional Service

The Federal Executive Council (FEC) has approved nine hundred and sixty-five point nine million for the purchase of 49 operational vehicles for the Nigeria Correctional Service.

Minister of Interior, Rauf Aregbesola, said this while briefing journalists at the end of the weekly FEC meeting.

The minister said the vehicles, to be sourced locally, would complement the ones already being used by the Nigeria Correctional Service.

He stated that the approval does not mean that the federal government has met the vehicle needs of the Nigerian Correctional Service, noting, however, that since the advent of this administration, concerted effort and commitment is being made to ensure that the correctional service is provisioned with operational tools to meet its mandate.

Biden Convenes Over 100 Nations Including Nigeria for ‘Democracy’ Summit

President Joe Biden, who took office amid the biggest US political crisis in decades, hosts representatives of more than 100 countries for a democracy summit Thursday that is drawing fire from China and Russia.

The event, held by video link because of the coronavirus pandemic, is billed by the White House as US leadership in an existential struggle between democracies and powerful autocracies or dictatorships.

The summit, running Thursday and Friday, will feature opening remarks from Biden at the White House and is set to gather representatives from some 100 governments, as well as NGOs, private businesses, philanthropical organizations and legislatures.

 

Champions League: All the teams that have dropped into Europa League

Barcelona is definitely the biggest club that will play in the Europa League in the new year.

The LaLiga giants were thrashed 3-0 by Bayern Munich in their last Group E fixture on Wednesday, a result that saw that finish in third place.

However, some other notable teams will play in Europe’s second-tier competition, like the Borussia Dortmund, FC Porto, RB Leipzig have all dropped into the Europa League from the Champions League this season and will be joined by Sevilla, Sheriff Tiraspol and Zenit.

The last club to join them will be determined when Atalanta take on Villarreal on Thursday, which was a game moved from Wednesday because of heavy snowing.
