New Service Chiefs: Nigerians react

Nigerians expressed conflicting views as President Muhammadu Buhari finally replaced the nation’s defense chiefs. While some applauded the action, others faulted the President and his action.

The retired military top brass was Chief of Defence Staff, General Abayomi Olonisakin; Chief of Army Staff, Lt-Gen. Tukur Buratai; Chief of Naval Staff, Vice Admiral Ibok Ekwe Ibas and Chief of Air Staff, Air Marshal Sadique Abubakar.

They were replaced with Major-General LEO Irabor, Chief of Defence Staff; Major-General I. Attahiru, Chief of Army Staff; Rear Admiral A.Z Gambo, Chief of Naval Staff; and Air-Vice Marshal I.O Amao, Chief of Air Staff.

The development was announced in a statement by the Special Adviser to the President on Media and Publicity, Mr. Femi Adesina.

Nigeria Records 15 More COVID-19 Deaths

 

Nigeria on Tuesday added 15 more deaths to its coronavirus toll, according to the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control.

In a late-night tweet, the disease control agency added that 1,303 new cases had been confirmed nationwide.

To date, 124,299 cases have been confirmed, 99,276 cases discharged and 1522 deaths recorded across the 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory.

Tuesday’s new cases were reported from 26 states, including Lagos (478), FCT (211), Nasarawa (83), Rivers (72), Kwara (42), Edo 36), Ondo (34), Benue (32), Kaduna (32), Katsina (26), Plateau (26), Kano (25), Taraba (25), Osun (22), Delta (21), Oyo (21), Niger (19), Sokoto (18), Ebonyi (17), Ekiti (14), Gombe (13), Ogun (12), Bauchi (11), Zamfara (8), Borno (4) and Jigawa (1). #

 

Mali Officially Disbands Military Junta

Mali has officially disbanded its military junta, according to a government decree seen by AFP on Tuesday, over five months after the army deposed president Ibrahim Boubacar Keita.

The junta briefly governed the country after the August 18 coup and formally remained in place even after the putschists handed power to a civilian interim government. #

Nollywood actor Ernest Asuzu is dead

Nollywood actor Ernest Asuzu has died on Tuesday evening after he fainted.

The news of his death was confirmed by his wife, Jennifer Asuzu, while adding that his remains has been conveyed to the east for funeral rites.

Ernest Asuzu began his acting career in the ’90s and rose to prominence after he starred in the 1997 Nollywood classic, ‘Rituals’

He was the toast of Nollywood until his career nosedived after he came down with a stroke in 2015 and it affected his speech. He was also bedridden for three years. #

 

Pinnick Declared Eligible For Membership of FIFA Council

 

President of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), Amaju Pinnick, has been declared eligible for membership of the FIFA Council.

In a letter dated January 26th, the Chairman of the FIFA Review Committee, Mukul Mudgal, informed Pinnick of his eligibility for the position.

Pinnick had disclosed his intention to vie for membership of the FIFA Council, which is the highest decision-making body in world football, back in November 2020.

With his eligibility confirmed, the NFF President is inching closer to his plan of claiming one of the two positions on the Council for the CAF Anglophone group. #
