The Kebbi state governor, Alhaji Atiku Bagudu, has approved the sum of N468.5 million for the execution of projects and empowerment programmes under the state Ministry of Women Affairs and Social Development. The Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Women Affairs and Social Development, Aisha Maikurata, made this known while briefing newsmen in Birnin Kebbi on Thursday. Maikurata said the fund was to show governor Bagudu’s continuous resolve to reduce poverty and uplift the standard of living of the people, especially the vulnerable in the state. She explained that the aim of the projects was to empower farmers, widows, orphans and youths as well as vulnerable women involved in economic activities in the 11 local government areas chosen. The Defence Headquarters says military operations conducted across the country between January 14-20, have led to the killing and arrests of 64, bandits, kidnappers and oil thieves. The Coordinator Defence Media Operation, Major-General John Enenche, who made this known, said the soldiers also arrested 24 suspected oil thieves and immobilized 6 illegal refining sites, 11 wooden boats, 52 Gee Pee tanks, 102 metal tanks, 17 dugout pits, and 45 ovens. Enenche at a briefing on the update of military operations conducted between January 14-21, said the soldiers recovered 14 pumping machines, 2-speed boats, and 13 outboard engines from the oil thieves, Nine Thousand, Eight Hundred and Fifty-Six point One barrels of stolen crude oil and One Million, Three Hundred and Thirty-Nine Thousand litres of illegally refined AGO and Five Hundred Thousand litres of DPK. Enenche said Troops of Operation HADARIN DAJI and other subsidiary operations have sustained their operations in the North-West Zone of the country progressively. The Police rounded up 26 notorious armed robberies and kidnap suspects among who were killers of a six-year-old girl and an Immigration officer. Force Public Relations Officer, CP Frank Mba who paraded the suspects in Abuja, said investigations by the Police team revealed that the kidnappers demanded a huge sum as ransom from the family of the little girl before she could be released, but eventually killed her owing to the inability of the family to meet up with their demands. Efforts by the Police team to rescue the little girl led to the arrest of the principal suspect, Friday Domozu, who led the police team to a deep forest at Gabije area of Kogi State where the remains of the little girl was recovered. Friday Domozu also revealed to the police that he is an ex-military trainee who was declared unfit and subsequently withdrawn 5-months into training based on medical grounds. The staff of Plateau State University (PLASU) have issued a seven-day ultimatum to the State Government to improve funding of the institution or face an indefinite strike. The Joint Action Committee of the Non-Academic Staff Union and Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities of the institution gave the ultimatum in a strike notice addressed to the Vice Chancellor. The notice of strike which jointly signed by Rwang Pam, Chairman, Non-Academic Staff Union, and Rimdap Timnan, Chairman, Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities, said that the decision was taken at the The Joint Action Committee meeting held January. 2019 The unions had voiced concerns over the abject underfunding of the university which has prevented the school from fulfilling its welfare obligations to members of staff by the Government of Plateau The Joint Action Committee listed issues to be addressed to include implementation of the new national minimum wage and payment of arrears as well as payment of Earned Allowances owed NASU and SSANU members. The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) in Osun state on Thursday confirmed the death of two persons in an accident involving a truck and Toyota Hiace bus at Iwaraja junction on Ipetu-Ijesa highway. The Sector Commander, Kudirat Ibrahim, made the confirmation in a statement issued by the command’s Spokesperson, Agnes Ogungbemi, in Osogbo. Ibrahim said the accident occurred about 4km from Iwaraja junction on Ipetu-Ijesa highway on Wednesday at about 10 pm. She said when the truck collided with the Toyota Hiace Bus involving six persons, two persons lost their lives in the process while three other persons got injured and were rushed to Wesley Hospital, Ilesa, for further treatment. Osun government has directed civil servants below grade level 12 to work from home effective from Monday January, 25th to minimize the spread of coronavirus in the state. The Secretary to the State Government, Wole Oyebamiji, on Wednesday in Osogbo, however, said that teachers, health workers, and other workers on essential services, irrespective of grade, were exempted from the directive. Oyebamiji also said that there would be a dusk-to-dawn curfew from 10pm. to 5am. everyday.
