North-East Governors Urge Military to Sustain Fight Against Insurgency

Governors of the northeast region have asked the military to sustain its momentum in the fight against insurgency in the region by taking advantage of the current division among the insurgents.

The governors made the call on Tuesday at the 5th edition of the North East Governors’ Forum held at the Taraba State Government House in Jalingo.

Speaking further, they called on the Federal Government to extend the exploration of oil to the Chad Basins so as to put the northeast states on the list of oil-rich states.

 

INEC: 203,497 eligible voters registered online

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has confirmed that two hundred and three thousand, four hundred and ninety-seven eligible Nigerians have completed the online pre-registration as fresh voters.

The figure, according to a statement by the National Commissioner and Chairman, Information and Voter Education Committee, Festus Okoye, could rise to two hundred and fifty-nine thousand seven hundred and thirteen if applications for voter transfer, replacement of Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs) and information are included.

He said details of the entire exercise have been uploaded on the commission’s website and social media platforms, and advised eligible Nigerians wishing to register physically and those who have scheduled their appointments to complete their online pre-registration to do so.

 

Security Guard Escapes from Police Custody, Pleads Guilty to Offence

A Security guard Ejembi Joseph, who allegedly escaped from Police Station, after being arrested, for stealing items from his employer, has been charged to court.

Joseph, 21, who stole values worth four million, one hundred and nineteen thousand, four hundred naira, pleaded guilty to the charge filed against him, and will on July 9, know his fate when the facts of his case would be reviewed and sentenced, by an Igbosere Magistrate court sitting in Lagos Island.

Magistrate Azeez Alogba, fixed the date to hear the review and facts of the case before sentencing the defendant who was arraigned and pleaded guilty to the offences before him on Tuesday.

Police Rescue 4 Kidnap Victims in Osun State

The Police Command in Osun on Tuesday said that it had rescued four commuters reportedly kidnapped on Tafida Imesi-Ile and Ilare and Esa-Odo Roads on Sunday and Monday respectively.

The command’s Spokesperson, Yemisi Opalola, in a statement in Osogbo said that a combined team of Police Tactical Unit, JTF, and local security outfits carried out the rescue operation, as soon as the Commissioner of Police in Osun, Olawale Olokode, received a distress call that some people had been abducted.

Opalola, however, said one of the local security operatives lost his life during a gun duel with the kidnappers, while another sustained injury from gunshots.

The statement stated that the Commissioner of Police appealed to the good citizens of the state to report any suspected person(s) with bullet wounds to the police.

 

I Was Paid N50,000 To Deliver 173 Parcels of Hemp to Daura — Suspect

A 50-year-old Sunday Isaac, was arrested on Tuesday at about 7:30pm, while trying to deliver one hundred and seventy-three parcels of Indian hemp from Zaria in Kaduna to Daura in Katsina has said he was promised fifty thousand naira for the delivery job.

 Isaac was arrested alongside one Hamisu Salisu, the bus conductor, while the bus driver is still on the run, and speaking with newsmen shortly after being paraded by men of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defense Corps (NSCDC), he said the money would be given to him after delivering the message.

Parading the suspects, the NSCDC spokesman in Katsina State, Mohammed Tukur, disclosed this while handing over the suspects and the exhibit to the National Drugs Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA).
