Why weapons purchased with supplementary budget can’t arrive now – CAS

The Chief of Air Staff, Air Marshal Oladayo Amao, says the military is unrelenting in the prosecution of war against terrorists and bandits across the country.

He also said weapons to be acquired from the recently approved supplementary budget might not arrive earlier than one year because manufacturers needed time to produce the military hardware.

Amao made the remarks at the presentation of a Christian devotional book titled, “The Amazing Life” on Saturday in Lagos. The book was written by an aviation professional, Damilola Ogunseye.

The Chief of Air Staff said that the President has provided all that is needed to see that the security challenge is brought down, but the money approved cannot buy anything yet until one to three years because most of the equipment has to be manufactured.

 

ASUU’s ultimatum to FG ends, lecturers say demands unmet

The Federal Government has begun moves to prevent industrial action in the country’s public universities as the Academic Staff Union of Universities’ three-week deadline ended on Sunday.

The Minister of State for Education, Chukwuemeka Nwajiuba, in an interview on Sunday, said the ministry had written a letter to the Ministry of Finance on the payment of allowances to the staff of universities.

The union said that the government had only met one of its demands.

 

Ekiti First Lady, Agbakoba, Pat Utomi, Hafsat Abiola named among the 100 most influential civil society leaders

The First Lady of Ekiti State and Co-Founder, African Women’s Development Fund (AWDF), Erelu Bisi Fayemi has been named among the 100 Most Influential Civil Society Leaders in Nigeria.

The list which was compiled by the umbrella body of NGOs in the country, the Nigeria Network of NGOs (NNNGO), comprised well-known Civil Society actors who have been at the forefront of social justice activism in the country for many years.

Notable names in the list include renowned activist and Professor of Political Economy, Pat Utomi, Founder Kudirat Initiative for Democracy (KIND), Hafsat Abiola-Castello and two former presidents of the Civil Liberties Organisation (CLO), Mr Olisa Agbakoba (SAN), and Mrs Ayo Obe.

 

NAWOJ congratulates the new NUJ FCT council executive

The National Association of Women Journalists (NAWOJ) Federal Capital Territory (FCT) chapter, has congratulated the newly elected Executive of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), FCT Council.

The congratulatory message of the association is contained in a letter jointly signed by the Chairperson, Mrs Annah Daniel and the Secretary, Mrs Nkiru Okeke, Secretary on Sunday in Abuja.

It said that journalists in FCT made the right choice by reelecting Mr Emmanuel Ogbeche as Chairman as well as other members of the new executive.

The association said Ogbeche’s re-election was due to his proven integrity, hard work and pedigree.

NAWOJ commended the inclusion of more women in the new council leadership, describing it as a development that would promote women participation in governance.

 

Tanzania@60: Mission prays for enhanced Tanzania-Nigeria ties

The High Commissioner of Tanzania to Nigeria, Dr Benson Bana, on Sunday night prayed for deeper ties between Tanzania and Nigeria, as the two countries clocked 60 years in diplomatic relations.

Bana prayed in Abuja at the Interfaith Prayers organised by the High Commission to commemorate Tanzania’s 60th independence anniversary.

According to him, this year’s independence anniversary celebration is unique and provides an opportunity to thank God for provision, guidance and care.

The High Commissioner said Nation-building is not an easy task, particularly in Africa; Tanzania is a nation-state which has so far not experienced internal conflicts.
