Police Arrest Abba Kyari, Four Other Officers
Police authorities have arrested a suspended Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP), Abba Kyari, and four other police officers, while the fifth suspect, ASP John Umoru, is still at large.
Deputy Force Public Relations Officer, Olumuyiwa Adejobi, who confirmed their arrest in a statement in Abuja, revealed that they have been handed over to authorities of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA).
They were arrested on Monday for their involvement in an alleged case of criminal conspiracy, discreditable, unethical and unprofessional conduct, official corruption, and tampering with exhibits in a case of illicit drug trafficking involving a perpetual transnational drug cartel, the police said. ##
FG Signs MOU On National Emergency Medical, Ambulance Services
The Ministry of Health on Monday signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the private sector and other stakeholders for the operationalization of the National Emergency Medical Service and Ambulance System (NEMSAS).
The Minister of Health, Osagie Ehanire, said NEMSAS would help Nigerians access care during emergencies at no cost. It also launched the implementation manual of the initiative.
He noted that emergency medical service will be delivered in three operational pathways: coverage of highways and roads; coverage of emergency within states and Federal Capital Territory; working in collaboration with respective authorities and involving domestic, workplace-related, assault and sports incidents. #
Nobody Should Address Pantami As A Professor – ASUU
The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) on Monday kicked against the promotion of Ali Isa Pantami, the Minister of Communications and Digital Economy, as a professor, says it is illegal.
Last year, the Federal University of Technology Owerri (FUTO) had named the minister as a professor in cybersecurity during its council’s 186th meeting. But addressing newsman after its National Executive Council meeting, ASUU President, Professor Emmanuel Osodeke, said the Minister was not qualified for appointment as a professor.
Pantami’s elevation has generated controversy, with many faulting Federal University of Technology Owerri (FUTO) on the promotion of the minister, who has never been on the teaching role of the university and whose highest academic attainment was just a lecturer before he ventured into politics.
The union also vowed to sanction its members involved in Pantami’s promotion including FUTO’s vice-chancellor. ###
Proprietor Makes U-Turn In Court, Denies Killing Hanifa Abubarkar
The case of the death of Hanifa Abubarkar took a new twist on Monday as her proprietor, Abdulmalik Tanko, made a U-turn to deny killing the five-year-old schoolgirl.
According to Haruna Kiyawa, the Police Public Relations Officer in Kano, Tanko, confessed that he kidnapped Hanifa and took her to his house where he contacted her relatives and demanded a ransom of N6 million.
Tanko however, agreed to only one charge bordering on conspiracy to commit kidnap. Tanko and his two other alleged accomplices were represented by a counsel from legal aid, Labaran Usman.
In his ruling, Justice Usman Naaba later adjourned until March 2 and 3 for the continuation of the hearing of the case. #
