WIDOW FAULTS POOR EFFORTS TO IMMORTALISE NIGERIA’S FIRST PRESIDENT
The widow of Nigeria’s first President, Chief Dr. Nnamdi Azikiwe, Professor Uche Azikiwe, says her major preoccupation is preserving the legacy of the late statesman by digitising and immortalising his writings and works.
Speaking in an exclusive interview with Signature TV, Professor Azikiwe said the task is so enormous that it has prevented her from actively carrying out her responsibilities as an Emeritus Professor at the University of Nigeria.
According to her, the documents and materials left behind by the late Zik of Africa are invaluable not only to the family but also to humanity, and must be preserved as important reference materials for future generations.
Professor Azikiwe expressed regret that neither the governments of the South-East states nor the Federal Government has made sufficient efforts to properly immortalise the late nationalist, despite his immense contributions to Nigeria’s independence and development.
The Emeritus Professor also decried the neglect of the Zik Mausoleum, a federal government project located in Onitsha, describing the facility as poorly maintained and unkempt while officials assigned to manage the centre are rarely present.
Professor Azikiwe further stated that Dr. Nnamdi Azikiwe and his contemporaries would be deeply saddened by the current state of the nation and the manner in which today’s leaders are managing the country’s affairs.
