The Senate President, Godswill Akpabio, has condemned the recent attack on Yelwata in Benue State, describing the killing of innocent civilians as “an act of terrorism”.

Speaking during the plenary session on Wednesday, Senator Akpabio expressed deep concern over the gruesome attack and raised fears that such violence may have political undertones.

He expressed hope that the killings were not politically motivated, warning that those behind the violence would be identified and brought to justice.

The Senate has also launched an investigation into the tragic killing of twelve travelers from Zaria, Kaduna State, who were on their way to a wedding in the Quan’pan Local Government Area, Plateau State, but were brutally murdered in Mangu District, Mangu Local Government Area, on Saturday.

This followed a motion sponsored by Senator Khalid Mustapha (Kaduna North).

In a resolution passed during plenary, the Senate condemned the killings and observed a minute of silence in memory of the victims.

The Senate, therefore, mandated its committees on national security and intelligence, defence, and police affairs to launch a comprehensive investigation into the killings and present appropriate recommendations.

The Senate further called on the Inspector General of Police to ensure the immediate arrest and prosecution of those responsible for the Mangun massacre of civilians.
