Covid-19 in Enugu. Patient not Foreign Affairs Minister

Foreign Affairs Minister Geoffrey Onyeama is not one of the patients who tested positive to Covid-19 in Enugu.

A statement in Abuja Sunday evening, signed by Sarah Sanda, Special Assistant Media to the Minister of Foreign Affairs, said “It has come to the attention of the Honourable Minister of Foreign Affairs, Mr Geoffrey Onyeama, that a fabricated and malicious report is circulating in social and print media alleging that the two claimed cases of Covid-19 recently reported in Enugu were the Minister and his Personal Assistant”.

The statement further clarified that “The Minister and his aide were in Abuja at all material times. Furthermore, the Minister is a member of the Presidential Taskforce on Covid-19 and all the members were recently tested and all found to be negative”.

The statement said “The authors of this act are well known as is their motive to embarass and spread alarm and panic during a national emergency.

“For that reason as well as to curb this kind of criminal behaviour, the matter has been brought to the attention of the law enforcement agencies for investigation and severe sanctions as a deterrence for the future”.

Meanwhile the Enugu State Ministry of Health has also debunked the reports that the two cases in the state that tested positive for Coronavirus disease (COVID-19) are the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Hon. Geoffrey Onyeama and his Personal Assistant.

In a statement by the Permanent Secretary, State Ministry of Health, Dr. Ifeanyi Agujiobi, the state government stated that the claims are untrue, fictitious and baseless as well as the handiwork of mischief makers who want to dent the image of the Minister.

Dr. Agujiobi maintained that the two postive cases of COVID-19 are returnees from United Kingdom (UK) and are currently on Isolation, doing very well.

According to Agujiobi, “Suffice it to say that Geoffrey Onyeama and his Personal Assistant are not the two cases of COVID-19, recently reported in Enugu.

“We hereby enjoin the general public to disregard any information on COVID-19 in Enugu State that does not emanate from the state government through the State Ministry of Health or Information. Let us be well guided”.

It will be recalled that recently two returnees from the United Kingdom, according to the Enugu Ministry of Health, tested positive to Corona virus.
