Fire Razes Potiskum Central Market In Yobe

Shops and goods located in the popular Potiskum Central Market in Yobe State were destroyed when a fire tore through the market in the early hours of today, Monday, December 28, 2020.

Chairman of the United Marketers Association (UMAPO), Potiskum chapter, Nasiru Alhaji Mato said on Monday that the fire started at about 2:30 am on Monday, 28th December, and raged till 4:00 am. By the time it was put out by fire fighters, “a lot of medicine stores, properties, stalls, shades, and firewood section of the market had been destroyed”.

The cause of the fire has not been revealed but a trader revealed that “we suspect the fire to have rouse from the site of Indian hemp smokers shade, they have become a nuisance to the entire area, they smoke from morning to night, this thing has been disturbing us for years, we appeal to NDLEA and other security forces to do something about this, the market shouldn’t be a place for smokers of prohibited dry leaves and other hard drugs”

According to reports, there was no power supply in the area at the time the fire began, thereby ruling out the possibility of an electrical fault.

Traders who arrived at the market this morning to find their means of livelihood destroyed were inconsolable and appealed to the Yobe State government and other well-meaning individuals to assist them.
