Peaceful nuclear technology: Nigeria must be involved – Ogbonnaya Onu

The Minister for Science and Technology Dr. Ogbonnaya Onu has stressed the need for the peaceful use of nuclear technology.
Onu was speaking on Thursday at a conference of stakeholders of the Nigeria Energy Calculator 2050 (NECAL2050) at Rockview Hotel, Abuja.

The conference was organized by the Energy Commission of Nigeria (ECN) an agency supervised by the Federal Ministry of Science and Technology and the Department of Climate Change Federal Ministry of Environment

The Minister said that NECLA2050 was created to explore ways to effectively and peacefully harness nuclear technology to create economic growth and provide sustainable electricity supply in Nigeria.

Also speaking at the event Prof. Eli J Bala, Director General of Energy Commission of Nigeria (ECN) said that NECLA2050 was developed in 2015 to explore public opinion on an energy partway to reduce the emission of greenhouse gases by 2050 and foster mass transportation systems.

In his contribution, Emmanuel Taiwo a representative of the British High Commission said that NECLA2050 was a manifestation of the Commission’s commitment to foster development in Nigeria.
He also commended ECM for it’s progress at NECLA2050 thus far despite the many challenges faced during 2020 as a result of Covid-19.

The meeting which recessed after the opening ceremony resumed later in the day with stakeholders participating in a working session.

The meeting came to an end with a vote of thanks by Mrs Iniobong Abiola-Awe, from the Department of Climate Change, Federal Ministry of Environment while stakeholders conversed in round table groups.
