Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf has committed to conducting local government elections in Kano State soon.

This is according to a statement released by his spokesperson Sanusi Bature Dawakin Tofa.

He said his principal made the promise during a meeting with stakeholders and the leadership of the ruling New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP) at Africa House, Government House, Kano, on Friday.

Governor Yusuf highlighted the administration’s readiness to hold the elections, aligning with the recent Supreme Court judgement that affirmed financial autonomy for local governments. He emphasised the government’s dedication to upholding the rule of law, financial prudence, accountability, and transparency at all levels of governance.

“Our administration has allowed the previous Local Government Executive Councils in the 44 LGAs to finish their tenure despite pressure from within. This is out of respect we have for the rule of law,” Governor Yusuf said.

He added, “So, our respect for accountability and in consideration of the recent Supreme Court judgment triggers our readiness to conduct council elections.”

The governor assured stakeholders of free, fair, and credible local government elections, urging opposition parties to participate without fear of interference from the government.

“We will not interfere with the electoral process,” he said.

Preparations for the council polls are already underway with the Kano State Independent Electoral Commission (KANSIEC) working diligently to ensure the elections occur soon.

“I can assure you this would hold any time soon,” the governor added.

In preparation for the elections, he said the NNPP would soon be selecting candidates to run for the offices of chairmen, vice chairmen, and councillors across the 44 LGAs.

“We shall run peaceful campaigns with the belief that the majority of Kano people will vote for NNPP,” the Kano governor said.
