Dangote Says Male Heir Not a Priority, Backs Daughters to Lead Business Empire

The Chairman of Dangote Group, Aliko Dangote, says having a male heir to inherit his business empire is not a priority.

Dangote, who spoke in an interview with ARISE News on Tuesday, said any of his three daughters could eventually take charge of the conglomerate.

He said he had been closely observing their development and believed they possessed the education, creativity and capacity to take the company to an even higher level.

Dangote’s daughters — Halima, Fatima and Mariya — hold senior positions within the Dangote Group, with their responsibilities expanding as the company develops its succession structure.

The billionaire said their involvement in the family business was driven by their own interest rather than pressure from him, adding that all three were capable of leading the company.

He also dismissed the traditional expectation that a male child must inherit the family name and business, saying having a son does not necessarily guarantee the preservation of a family legacy.

Dangote said he believed his daughters could achieve more than he had, describing them as highly educated and potentially more creative in taking the company forward.

Beyond family succession, the businessman said his priority was to ensure the Dangote Group remained professionally managed and operated under the highest standards of corporate governance.

Citing global companies such as Microsoft and Apple, Dangote said successful businesses should be structured to thrive beyond their founders and make it difficult for any family member to undermine the organisation.

He said his ultimate legacy was not simply to pass the conglomerate to his children, but to contribute to the industrialisation of Africa.

Dangote added that while he could not achieve that ambition alone, he was confident more Africans would join the effort in the coming years.
