The Abia State Government on Friday said that it has set up isolation centres in the state as part of measures to manage cases of Lassa fever and coronavirus.
In a statement issued by the state’s Commissioner for Information, Chief John Okiyi-Kalu, two out of the four isolation centres are located in Umuahia North and South local government areas respectively, the Federal Medical Centre (FMC), Umuahia and Amachara Specialist Hospital.
Okiyi-Kalu, who said the state was considering a third isolation centre in Aba to be sited at the Abia State University Teaching Hospital (ABSUTH), while the fourth isolation centre would be sited in a yet-to-be-named location for Abia North Senatorial zone.
According to the Information Commissioner, the choice of the state for the FMC and Amachara Specialist Hospital was because the former have good experience in the management of patients with infectious diseases such as those infected with Lassa fever.
“The facilities are purpose-equipped for isolation of patients with such infectious diseases, including those who may present with Coronavirus,” Okiyi-Kalu stated
Furthermore, the state government’s spokesman disclosed that over 10,000 face masks and 1,000 digital thermometers with the state ministry of health were ready for distribution to health institutions among other identified places.
This is even as he stated that adequate media resources to launch aggressive sensitization campaign in the state through partnership with private and government-owned media houses in the state and beyond were identified.
