Coronavirus disease (COVID-19) is an infectious disease caused by a newly discovered coronavirus.
COVID-19 is confirmed as air borne and remain 8 hours in air! So everyone is required to wear mask everywhere.
Symptoms

- According to the WHO, the most common symptoms of Covid-19 are fever, tiredness and a dry cough.
- Some patients may also have a runny nose, sore throat, nasal congestion and aches and pains or diarrhoea. About 80{c45cf338a462ca509edbe47468f20bc08b80b46a3d7b36f5657b2a6bc418ef14} of people who get Covid-19 experience a mild case – about as serious as a regular cold – and recover without needing any special treatment.
- About one in six people, the WHO says, become seriously ill. The elderly and people with underlying medical problems like high blood pressure, heart problems or diabetes, or chronic respiratory conditions, are at a greater risk of serious illness from Covid-19.
In the Nigeria, the National Cter for Disease Control (NCDC) has identified the specific symptoms to look for as experiencing either:
- a high temperature – you feel hot to touch on your chest or back
- a new continuous cough – this means you’ve started coughing repeatedly.
As this is viral pneumonia, antibiotics are of no use. The antiviral drugs we have against flu will not work, and there is currently no vaccine. Recovery depends on the strength of the immune system.

Prevention
The best way to prevent and slow down transmission is be well informed about the COVID-19 virus, the disease it causes and how it spreads. Protect yourself and others from infection by washing your hands or using an alcohol based rub frequently and not touching your face.
Practice social distancing i.e limiting public gatherings as much as possible.
How it spreads
- The COVID-19 virus spreads primarily through droplets of saliva or discharge from the nose when an infected person coughs or sneezes, so it’s important that you also practice respiratory etiquette (for example, by coughing into a flexed elbow).
- Between people who are in close contact with one another (within about 6 feet).
Treatment
At this time, there are no specific vaccines or treatments for COVID-19. However, there are many ongoing clinical trials evaluating potential treatments.
