Catholic bishops, faithful march against widespread killings

A large congregation of Catholic faithful and parishioners of the Catholic Arc-Dioceses of Abuja on Sunday afternoon matched against the widespread killings in the country.

Adorned in black attires, they marched from the Christian Centre at the Central Business District to Our Lady Queen of Nigeria, Pro-Cathedral, Area 3 Garki, Abuja,[ a distance of over three miles] protesting against widespread killings in Nigeria by Boko Haram, bandits, kidnappers, hired assassins and armed rubbers.

The Catholics in the procession prayed the rosary and displayed placards some of which read, ”President Buhari, stop the killings now, Christians are being annihilated, Nigeria is a secular country etc.”

The Catholic Bishops who led the match enjoined President Mohammadu Buhari to listen to the yearnings of the people to save them from the growing spate of insecurity in the country.

They noted that Nigerians and especially Christians are being killed every day and appealed to the president to do something immediately to stop the killings. The Bishops called on the international community to assist Nigeria in the fight against insurgency and other forms of criminality bedevilling the country.

”We are amazed that our President, Mohammadu Buhari, sends condolences across the world when people are killed in other countries, but ignores the massacres by Boko Haram, herdsmen and bandits who kill citizens on virtually daily basis.

Other leaders visit communities and states where one or two of their citizens are killed to commiserate with them, but ours can never visit the communities and states where citizens are killed almost on a daily basis. This is very absurd,” they lamented.

Earlier at a Mass to mark the First Plenary Meeting of Catholic Bishops Conference of Nigeria, CBCN for 2020, held at the Catholic Secretariat, Abuja, the Catholic Arch-Bishop of Abuja Diocese, Ignatius Kaigama lamented that Nigerians are suffering under the administration of President Mohammadu Buhari. saying the government seems disconnected from the people.

He added that the Buhari administration has not done enough to tackle the problems of insecurity and other political, economic and social issues affecting Nigerians.

The Catholic Bishop appealed to leaders to be more accessible to the people, most especially those in the grassroots.

“Nigerians are suffering and they come to us because we are the grassroots men, they don’t have access to the president.

Let’s listen to the people. We have to cultivate the spirit of patriotism, the spirit of one Nigeria. Something must be done to repair the damage that has been done whereas so many things divide us as a nation; religion, ethnic, and many other factors,” Bishop Kaigama said.
