Veteran Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) Coach, Kennedy Boboye, has returned to Akwa United for the rest of the season after signing a deal with the club on Monday.

The Uyo-based club announced the deal in a statement on its X handle on Monday.

“We have agreed a mid-season managerial contract with coach Kennedy Boboye,” the statement said.

“Boboye who won the NPFL title with us in 2021 signed the deal today and he is expected to begin work with the team later this week.”

Boboye, who was in charge when Akwa United lifted the league trophy in 2021, will have to deal with the herculean task of keeping the Akwa Ibon State-owned club in the Nigerian topflight.

Akwa United currently sit 19th after 19 games in the 20-team table, leaving the club needing a turnaround to maintain their topflight status.

The club is to second NPFL club to change coach ahead of the start of the second stanza of the 2024/2025 league season.

In December, nine-time champions, Enyimba International FC, appointed Stanley Eguma, a seasoned tactician and one of the most respected figures in Nigerian football, as their new head coach.

This followed the departure of their former head coach, Yemi Daniel Olanrewaju. Eguma, who previously served as part of Enyimba’s coaching staff during their CAF Champions League triumphs in the early 2000s, brings a wealth of experience and a proven track record of success.
