The recent clash between members of the Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB, and the Directorate of State Services, DSS, in Emene, Enugu, southeast Nigeria, has continued to elicit public disdain and condemnation.

The Coalition of Public Interest Lawyers and Advocates, COPA, while addressing newsmen in Abuja, condemned the clash, saying “the recent extra judicial Killings of young men alleged to be Members of Indigenous People of Biafra in Enugu State calls for serious concern.”

The convener of the Coalition, PeIumi Olanjengbesi, Said the recurring arrests, torture, and murder of citizens in recent times across the country was a gross violation of their fundamental Human rights.

Citing incidence of many such cases of abuse, the coalition listed the Arrest And detention of Lance Corporal Martin Idakpini and his Wife, Mrs. Victoria, saying that the refusal of the Military to allow them access to legal representation buttresses their point.

Idakpini was arrested on the 23rd June 2020, after appearing in a viral video where he castigated Security Chiefs for not showing commitment to ending the incessant killings of Nigerians by terrorists and armed bandits.

They expressed concern that these issues have gained steady upward traction without any hope in sight as there seems to be tacit support for these actions by the very institutions of State that ought to call the agents to account.

COPA threatened to call on the international community to intervene in what they described as the increasing violation of human rights by security agencies in the country.
