Corruption creates challenges for youths, women – Anti corruption Experts
By John Onyiah
Experts want Nigerian women and youth to watch their backs because the dire situation in the country makes them vulnerable to corruption.
At a webinar organized by Signature Communications Limited on its Corruption Tori Platform, Founder of Aspire Women Forum, Zainab Marwa said that women are not blameless in the challenge of corruption confronting Nigeria.
She argued that the patriarchal nature of Nigerian society compels women to give something, either sex or bribe, before they can be considered for public office or even political opportunities.
While calling for unconditional support for women to rise to high level public positions and playing prominent roles in Nigerian politics, Zainab cautioned women not just be averse to corruption because of the fear of stigma, but to refuse to be corrupt as a matter of principle.
Also speaking at the webinar, Obinna Stanley, President Emeritus of Global Youth Network cautioned the youth about remaining as pathological complainants and faultfinders instead of seeking what can be done to fix the Nigerian nation.
He suggested that the Nigerian youth must create a pool of common demands or common interests and lend their voices for change.
He encouraged the youth to go into politics but also to explore entrepreneurial opportunities in the country to create a measure of independence for themselves.
Obinna, who warned the youth against seeking a quick fix to national challenges or their own unrealized dreams, said that an attitude of moving on the fast lane creates banana peels that slip the youth into corruption.
Anti-corruption organizations like the MacArthur Foundation, Dataphyte and some media organizations participated in the webinar which will be a monthly anti-corruption roundtable initiated by Signature Communications Limited, producers of the popular TV show CorruptionTori.
