Farmers in Enugwukwu in Njikoka Local Government Area of Anambra State, are appealing for stronger government intervention to tackle the challenges confronting food production in the state.

They made this known during the 2025 Enugwukwu Agricultural Exhibition, a yearly event that showcases farm produce, recognizes the efforts of rural farmers, and promotes agricultural development.

Participants at the fair noted that agriculture remains central to food security and economic stability, stressing the need for policies that will make farming more attractive to the youth.

Farmers, who exhibited their agricultural products, called for support in the form of access to finance, fertilizer, farm equipment, and seedlings to encourage large-scale cultivation.

Nkemdilim Ofoedu who specializes in rearing Igbo breed cows says he faces the challenges of finance and rising prices of cattle in the business.

Ofoedu emphasized the cultural significance of local cows in Igbo tradition, particularly for special occasions like title conferment calling for government support to enable him expand the business to a large scale.

Another farmer, Chisom Ndibe, said he has been into ginger farming for the past three years which he said is being hampered due to lack of adequate support and space to farm on a larger scale.

He highlighted the values of ginger for cooking, and its medicinal values in treating infections and solution to stomach injuries.

Christopher Nwoye, who is into cassava farming said agriculture is becoming less profitable because of the cost of labour, inputs like fertilizer, and other items needed to support farming.

In his address, traditional ruler of Enugwukwu community, Igwe Sir Ralph Ekpe called for more encouragement to farmers to help in feeding the society while the chairman of Njikoka Local Government, Chinedu Ononiba, assured the farmers of the government support to boost their production.

Participants at the exhibition displayed a variety of farm produce, ranging from tubers and grains to vegetables and livestock, reflecting the community’s contribution to food supply in the state.

For them, sustained support will not only reduce food scarcity but also empower rural communities and drive national growth.
