Federal Government releases N1 billion for Enugu International Airport

The Federal Government has released the sum of one billion naira for the completion of the terminal building, cargo wing and free trade zone of the Akanu Ibiam International Airport, Enugu.

President Buhari had released N10 billion about a year ago for the repair of the runway and associated works at the airport.

President Muhammadu Buhari said this in Enugu on Sunday at the reopening and Inauguration of the Akanu Ibiam International Airport, Enugu.

Representated by the Minister of Aviation, Hadi Sirika, the President encouraged the governments and people of the South East, to increase their patronage of the airport, now that it is again open for domestic and international flights.

Sirika who noted the deplorable state of the airport runway, said it has not only been reconstructed to international standards, but that associated works such as the instrument landing systems, communication V-Sat, new BHF radio, search and rescue system and the taxi way, have been completely reinstalled at the airport.

Earlier, the Governor of Enugu State, Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi, praised the efforts of the Federal Government at infrastructural development of the country, saying the reconstructed Akanu Ibiam International Airport, will not only help in the development of Enugu State, but also the entire South East geo-political zone.

The Chairman of South East Governors Forum and Governor of Ebonyi State, Dave Umahi, thanked the President for funding the reconstruction of the airport, saying that the rehabilitation of the Enugu-Port Harcourt Expressway has reached 80% completion, while the 2nd Niger Bridge is going on well, and has also reached an advanced stage.

President Muhammadu Buhari approved and released N10 billion through the special funds for the reconstruction of the Akanu Ibiam International Airport. The works included the reconstruction of the airport runway, provision of instrument landing system, new BHF radio, Communication V-Sat, among others.

The work also led to the removal of the popular “Oye Emene Market,” a communication mast and the expansion of the perimeter fence of the airport.
