FG committed to fundamental human rights of citizens in diaspora – Minister of Foreign Affairs

The Foreign Minister Geoffrey Onyema has reaffirmed the ministry’s commitment to the protection of the fundamental human right of Nigerians in diaspora.

The Minister who was represented by Bolaji Akinremi, the Director Consular and Legal department, Ministry of Foreign Affairs made this statement at the Public Presentation of the Book titled “The Dialectics of Right: Nigeria’s Engagement With The Universal Periodic Review of Human Rights Council” at National Human Rights Commission in Abuja on Tuesday.

The Foreign Minster while commending the author of the book Dr. Uchenna Emelonye described it as a wonderful work. The Universal Periodic Review (UPR) according to him is a human rights promotion and protection system of the United Nations General Assembly that came into existence through Resolution 60/251 of March 2006 with the aim of accessing member states commitment to their international human rights obligation.

Tony Ojukwu, the Executive Secretary of the National Human Rights Commission while giving the welcome address at the event said the commission was happy to work with Uche Emelonye on the publication which he described as the first of it’s kind.

Ojukwu, also said that the UPR is aimed at improving human rights in countries by regularly assessing the positive human rights developments and challenges faced by the country.

Also speaking at the event was the Attorney General of the Federation, Abubakar Malami represented by Abiodun Aikomo, Special Adviser to the President on Financial Crimes. He said that part of Nigeria’s commitment to UPR can be seen in the International Convention for the Protection of All Persons from Enforced Disappearance, Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities, Options Protocol to the Convention Against Tortures amongst others.

The Hightlight of the event was the Unveiling of the Book.

According to the book Reviewer Eze Onyekpere, the Executive Director of Centre for Social Justice “The Dialectics of Right: Nigeria’s Engagement with the Universal Periodic Review of Human Rights Council” is an objective account of the four UPR written in simply grammar and a worthy read to Journalist, Politicians, and historian alike.
