The fire outbreak, which occured on Wednesday evening, was said to have emanated from a bush fire close to the secretariat.
A resident of the area, Mr Frank Okolie, said the fire lasted hours, noting that it would have destroyed a lot of property in the secretariat but for the intervention of firefighters from the Anambra State Fire Service.
Anambra State Fire Chief, Engr. Martin Agbili, who confirmed the outbreak said: “At about 1853hrs (6.53pm) of Wednesday, 07-02-2024, Anambra State Fire Service, received a distress call of a heavy fire outbreak at Dunukofia.”
He said a fire truck and Firefighters were deployed to the scene, adding that the fire was caused by bush burning.
Agbili further stated that during the firefighting operation, they were able to control and extinguish the fire and prevent it from destroying a lot of things at the local government secretariat.
“We withdrew from the fire scene at about 2030hrs (8.30pm) after fighting the fire to standstill and calming the situation.
“It is important that we clear all bushes around our environment, especially at this dry season and harmattan. Fire kills but you can prevent it,” he added.
