Five Dead, Many Injured As Vehicle Ram Residents in Mpape

Residents of Mpape, a suburb of the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja have been thrown into mourning and tears as a Toyota Sienna Bus killed about five persons and injured several others.

The accident which happened around 7pm on Saturday left scores of market women and commuters badly injured.

An eye witness, Effiong Akpan who spoke to Signature TV reporter said the Sienna bus was coming into Mpape and knocked down a bike man to the ground.

On realizing the he had hit a bike man down, tried to escape and in the process rammed communters on the road

Akpan said residents who witnessed the incident ran after the driver and caught him.

He also said that the driver was killed immediately and his bus burnt down by group of angry residents who caught him trying to escape.

Confirming the incident, the Divisional Police Officer in charge of Mpape division who spoke off the record said it took timely intervention of his men and men of the Nigerian Army from Lungi barracks to forestall peace in the area and the corpse have been taken away.

The DPO said Victims of the accident were rushed to Jalel Pharmacy located in the area and they are currently receiving treatment.

Some of the victims were identified as Abubakar Idris, Hakili Mohammed amongst others

Some of the residents who witnessed the accident complained bitterly that it was not the first time such accident is happening within the last two months.

They blamed bad road, recklessness of drivers and disobedience to traffic rules as some of the reason for the frequent accident in the area.
