INEC Declares Tinubu Winner of Nigeria’s 2023 Presidential Election

The Presidential Candidate of All Progressive’s Congress (APC), Bola Ahmed Tinubu has been declared the winner of the 2023 presidential election having scored 8,794, 726 votes.

People’s Democratic Party’s Atiku Abubakar got 6,984, 520 votes, Peter Obi of Labour Party scored 6, 101,533 while Rabiu Kwankwaso of New Nigerians People’s Party (NNPP) scored 1, 496, 687 votes.

The Chairman, Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) Professors Mahmud Yakubu made the announcement on Wednesday, few minutes after 4am at the National Collation Center Abuja in front of party agents.

“That Bola Ahmed Tinubu of APC having satisfied the requirements of the law and scored highest number of votes is hereby declared winner of the 2023 elections and is returned elected” INEC Chairman said.

According to Section 134 of the Nigerian Constitution, a presidential candidate can only be announced as the winner if he or she has the majority of votes cast at the election; and has not less than one-quarter of the votes cast at the election in at least two-thirds of all the States in the Federation and the FCT.

Tinubu won in twelve states, Ekiti, Kwara, Ondo, Ogun, Oyo, Jigawa, Niger, Benue, Kogi, Zamfara, Rivers and Borno states.

Atiku Abubakar also won in twelve States; Osun, Yobe, Katsina, Gombe, Sokoto, Akwa Ibom, Kaduna, Kebbi, Adamawa, Bauchi, Bayelsa and Taraba States.

While Peter Obi of Labour Party sprang a big surprise also winning in twelve States; Lagos, Anambra, Ebonyi, Delta, Cross River, Plateau, Abia, Edo, FCT, Nassarawa and Enugu State.

The 2023 Presidential election took place on February 25th and the result was announced on March 1st, after the thirty-six states including the FCT results were announced.

From the results announced in the different states, some of the elections results were cancelled as a result of over voting in some polling units, while some were cancelled due to insecurity.

Eighteen political parties contested in the 2023 presidential. They included Accord Party, Action Alliance Party (AA), African Action Congress Party (AAC), African Democratic Congress Party (ADC), Actions Democratic Party (ADP), All Progressive’s Congress (APC), All Progressive Grand Alliance(APGA), Allied People’s Movement (APM), Action People’s Party (APP), Because Of Our Tomorrow (BOOT) Party, Labour Party (LP), New Nigerians People’s Party (NNPP), National Rescue Mission (NRM) party, People’s Democratic Party (PDP), People’s Redemption Party (PRP), Social Democratic Party (SDP), Too Young Progressive Party (YPP) and Zenith Labour (ZLP) Party.
