The Independent National Electoral Commission has recognised Major Agbo as the National Chairman of the New Nigeria People’s Party, replacing factional chairman Bala Yusuf.

The development was announced at a press conference in Abuja on Wednesday.

An independent check confirmed that Agbo’s name has been uploaded on INEC’s portal as the party’s national chairman.

The electoral commission also updated its records with the names of members of the party’s National Working Committee, including National Secretary Olaposi Oginni, National Treasurer Prince Adetoyese Omokanye, National Financial Secretary Anthony Apugo and National Legal Adviser Asuquo Ibok.

The latest development marks a significant turn in the leadership tussle that has rocked the opposition party since the 2023 general election, with rival factions laying claim to the party’s leadership.

Addressing journalists, Agbo described the update on INEC’s portal as a validation of his leadership.

He said, “I am pleased to formally announce that the complete upload of the duly recognised National Working Committee under my leadership has been concluded by INEC.

“We were sure that the judiciary would do justice to the issues and we are indeed not disappointed. They proved to be truly the last hope of the common man, rose to the occasion, defended our democracy and rule of law in the face of avoidable threats.”

Agbo also disclosed that the party had begun preparations for the 2027 general elections following the electoral commission’s recognition of the new leadership.

“Following this achievement, the party has commenced the process of uploading candidates for the 2027 general elections in accordance with the timetable and guidelines of the Independent National Electoral Commission after receiving the access code recently.

“We are determined to present competent, credible and people-oriented candidates who will champion good governance and national development in line with our manifesto. The NNPP remains open to every patriotic Nigerian who desires positive change,” he stated.

Agbo also called for stronger collaboration to address the country’s security challenges and urged INEC to remain impartial ahead of the next general election.

He said, “We must join hands with the Federal Government to tackle the challenge of insecurity in Nigeria. However, we call on the FG and all security agencies to strengthen intelligence gathering, improve inter-agency collaboration and deploy every lawful means necessary to restore peace and protect the lives of Nigerians.

“The confidence of Nigerians in the democratic process depends largely on the integrity, independence and professionalism of the electoral umpire.”

When contacted for reaction, Yusuf confirmed the development.

The NNPP factional national chairman, however, said he was not in a position to address the matter in detail.

“Yes, I am aware. However, I don’t have enough time to discuss the details.

“Right now, I am in transit. When I come to Abuja. I will release a statement,” he stated.
