The Lagos State Government has condemned the attack on a reporter with the Guild Press Limited, Benjamin Anaja, by some personnel of the Lagos State Environment Sanitation Corps at the Meiran bus stop area of the state.
Anaja was allegedly assaulted by the officers on Wednesday while he was recording an enforcement exercise.
The state Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources, Tunji Bello, who condemned the attack on Thursday, said the state government had a zero-tolerance for any form of the brutalisation of members of the public by any of its agents.
Bello, in a statement said the matter would be investigated and all the personnel involved interrogated while punitive measures would be taken if found culpable.
He added, “The complainant will also be invited to come forward and substantiate his complaint and possibly identify the culprits who attacked him despite identifying himself as a journalist.
“I want to apologise to the victim, the management of the Guild publishing company and the Nigerian Union of Journalists, and promise that such will not repeat itself as the present administration under the leadership of Governor Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu believes in a free and unfettered media which is a basic requirement for a better and egalitarian society.”
