The Enugu State Government and the French government have flagged off a water infrastructure project aimed at boosting supply across the state capital.

The ceremony was jointly performed by Governor Peter Mbah and the French Ambassador to Nigeria, Marc Fonbaustier.

It was a significant step toward addressing water supply challenges in Enugu, as Governor Peter Mbah and the French Ambassador to Nigeria, Marc Fonbaustier, flagged off the construction of a 14-point-5 kilometre high-capacity water transmission pipeline.

The project, which runs from Nsude to the Terminal Reservoir at Miliken Hill, is designed to strengthen water distribution and ensure reliable supply to homes, businesses, and institutions across the metropolis.

Speaking at the groundbreaking ceremony, the Secretary to the State Government, Chidiebere Onyia, who represented Governor Peter Mbah, described the initiative as a major milestone in the administration’s commitment to delivering sustainable water supply to Enugu residents.

He noted that the project, supported by the French Development Agency under the Third National Urban Water Sector Reform Programme, would significantly improve public health, stimulate economic growth, and enhance the quality of life.

Earlier, Governor Peter Mbah reiterated his administration’s resolve to ensure water reaches every part of the state capital, explaining that while water production has increased dramatically, efforts are now focused on strengthening distribution infrastructure.

The French Ambassador, Marc Fonbaustier disclosed that the government of France has made investments totaling over 340 million dollars in Nigeria’s water sector in the past decade.

The Commissioner for Water Resources, Ben Collins Ndu Jr and the Managing Director of the Enugu Water Corporation, Michael Nwachukwu expressed appreciation to the French Government for its continued support.

The Contractor, Hilary Abaratu, assured that the project would be delivered on schedule and in line with global standards.

As work begins on the 14-point-5 kilometre pipeline, expectations are high that the project will mark a turning point in the delivery of potable water across Enugu metropolis.

For residents who have long grappled with inconsistent supply, the initiative offers renewed hope for a more reliable and sustainable water system.
