Mourners Besiege Senator Ayogu Eze’s Residence in Abuja

Early mourners besieged the Maitama Abuja residence of Senator Ayogu Eze, who passed away Thursday after a protracted illness, to condole with the family.

Reports from his Independence Layout residence in Enugu and his family house in Enugu Ezike also indicate that friends and associates have continued to visit to express their condolences.

According to sources close to the family, the Distinguished Senator who represented Enugu North Senatorial Zone from 2007 to 2015 had been ill for sometime but a fall about a month ago, aggravated his health situation, leading to his shocking death on Thursday 25th of April, 2024.

Guests at his daughters traditional wedding on 3rd of February this year in Abuja, had expressed concern over his noticeable loss of weight.

A friend who did not want his name mentioned told SignatureTV that “Senator Ayogu was not his boisterous self at that marriage and seeing him you knew something was wrong”

Among visitors to his home Thursday, were Senator Emmanuel Paulker of Bayelsa State, the former Speaker of the Enugu State House of Assembly, Honourable Eugene Odoh,  Labour Party Governorship candidate Chijioke Edeoga, Spokesman of former President Goodluck Jonathan and relation of the deceased Ikechukwu Eze, President of Signature TV, Ebubedike VinMartin Obiora Ilo, Dave Nnamani, PhD, former Labour Party gubernatorial aspirant in Enugu State, World Bank Consultant, Greg Anyaebudike, Dr Mrs Valerie Azinge, SAN, Barr Chris Ezeugwu, APC stalwart Barthlomew Ugwoke and many others.

In a statement Thursday, signed by the Senator’s first son, Kenechukwu Ayogu Eze, the family said “Senator Eze died in the early hours of today, April 24, 2024 in an Abuja hospital after a brief illness, at the age of 65”.

He noted that he took his last breath surrounded by family members, stressing that Senstor Eze “was a compassionate husband, devoted father and selfless sibling to all family members.”

He stated further: “Words cannot describe the pain in our hearts at this moment and we are devastated as a family as we break this news of his passing.

“Senator Eze was a man with the warmest of hearts and a sincere patriot who diligently served the country and humanity in various capacities.

The mood at his residence was that of shock and gloom as many expressed surprise at his demise.

“You were a visioner. You had great dreams for our nation. You did your part. RIP great patriot.” VinMartin Ilo wrote in the condolence register which was opened at his residence.

“Ayogu Eze’s death came as a rude shock. I knew he was unwell but I never knew it will come to this so soon. Nigeria has lost a patriotic colossus and Enugu State has lost a great son”, Dr Dave Nnamani said during his condolence visit.

Until his death, Senator Eze was the Enugu State representative at the RMFAC (Revenue Allocation Mobilisation and Fiscal Commission) and also served as a member on the board of the Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA).

In his days at the National Assembly,  Senator Eze was chairman, Senate Committee on Works, and also chairman, Senate Committee on Information & Media. 

The late Eze was once a Commissioner for Information & Media, as well as Special Adviser in Enugu  State.
