National Grid Collapse : Group Call For Urgent Action And Accountability
The social body, Kick Out Power Abuse (KOPA) have voiced their displeasure, in the incessant power grid collapses that have plunged countless homes, businesses, and communities into darkness.
The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) has identified sudden rise in frequency from 50.33Hz to 51.44Hz as the cause of the latest National grid collapse on Thursday.
This is according to a statement released on Thursday in Abuja by the group, as they regretted that the recent collapses, including two within three days this past week, mark the ninth incident in 2024 alone. These failures are not mere technical glitches; they are a national crisis that profoundly affects citizens’ lives, safety, and livelihoods.
“The administration of President Bola Tinubu was entrusted by the Nigerian people with the mandate to drive meaningful progress, including resolving the persistent energy crisis. The recurring collapses have yet to be meaningfully addressed, despite continued assurances of investment and modernization within the energy sector. Nigerians, who contribute to the economy and pay their electricity tariffs, deserve accountability and a transparent explanation for why grid stability remains elusive” it added.

Despite continued assurances of investment and modernization within the energy sector, the recurring collapses have yet to be meaningfully addressed and tangible success recorded. Nigerians, who contribute to the economy and pay their electricity tariffs, deserve accountability and a transparent explanation for why grid stability remains elusive” the statement read in part.
“Each grid collapse brings more than just temporary inconvenience—it inflicts serious economic losses, disrupts medical services, and places lives in danger. Essential services, from healthcare facilities reliant on electricity for life-saving equipment to small businesses struggling with productivity losses, are severely impacted. Families are forced into unsafe living conditions, reliant on costly and environmentally harmful alternatives like diesel generators.” it added.
The group demand for transparent investigation by the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) into the root causes of these grid failures. Nigerians deserve a clear timeline and actionable plan for addressing these failures.

“Infrastructure Investment: We call on the Tinubu administration to expedite investment in infrastructure upgrades, especially in the areas of transmission and distribution. This includes implementing the Siemens power project with full accountability to ensure these upgrades yield real results” it added.
“Legislative Oversight: The National Assembly must exercise its oversight powers to ensure the Ministry of Power and its affiliated agencies are held accountable for delivering on their mandate to secure reliable energy for all”.
Kick Out Power Abuse calls on the administration and all relevant stakeholders to treat this issue with utmost urgency. Stable and reliable electricity is a fundamental right, and Nigerians deserve better from their leaders and not the ongoing neglect and empty promises been served over the years.
