A new Speaker has been elected at the Kaduna State House of Assembly, barely an hour the former Speaker, Abdullahi Shagali resigned.
The new Speaker is. Yusuf Ibrahim Zailani.
Zailani, who represents Igabi West Constituency in the Assembly, was the Deputy Speaker of the Assembly until his election to lead the House on Tuesday.
Zailani is a strong member of the ruling All Progressives Congress, APC.
Also, Hon Mukhatar Isa Hazo, representing Bassawa Constituency has been elected as the new Deputy Speaker.
Both of them have been sworn-in by the Clark of the Assembly.
The former Speaker, who represents Sabon-Gari Constituency in the Assembly, officially submitted his resignation letter to the clerk of the House on Tuesday morning.
Reports indicate that members of the House had started collecting signatures to impeach him before he eventually bowed to pressure and resigned.
Chairman, House Committee on information, Tanimu Musa confirmed he submitted his resignation letter.
However, Shagali’s offence warranting the alleged planned impeachment was not immediately made known to the public.
Aminu Abdullahi Shagali, on Tuesday morning, resigned his position as the Speaker of Kaduna State House of Assembly.
According to sources from the Assembly, he tendered his resignation before the house during the plenary session.
The 40-year-old lawmaker was elected as the Speaker of the 5th Kaduna State Assembly on 8 June 2015.
He has been representing Sabon Gari constituency in the Kaduna State House of Assembly since 2011.
He was elected under the Congress for Progressive Change, CPC, one of the opposition political parties founded by his mentor Muhammadu Buhari.
Between 2011 and June 2015, Shagali held many key positions in the Assembly; he was Deputy Minority Leader and Chairman, House Committee on Science and Technology, Deputy Chairman, House Committee on Hajj and Islamic affairs, and Deputy Chairman House Committee on Economic Planning.
