Nigerians form bulk of foreign prisoners Telangana
In Telangana, the youngest state in India, Nigerians outnumber other foreign nationals among those lodged in various prisons, while Bangladeshi nationals form a bulk of foreign prisoners incarcerated in the country.
Currently, there are 24 Nigerian prisoners in the state and all of them are lodged inChanchalguda Central Prison in Hyderabad.
According to prison department officials, the Nigerian remand and undertrial prisoners are booked in drug peddling and cybercrime cases under the NDPS Act, IT Act, Immigration Act and Foreigners Act.
After Nigerians, prisoners from Bangladesh, Nepal and Myanmar have double-digit occupancy in the state prisons. There are four prisoners from Pakistan lodged in the central prisons of the state. Chinese nationals arrested by Hyderabad police in loan app cases have been released on bail. The prison authorities said there were 13 Bangladeshis, including five women prisoners, 11 Nepalese, including two women, and 10prisoners from Myanmar. They were lodged in Chanchalguda, Cherlapally, Karimnagar and Special Prison for Women in Hyderabad.
Pakistani nationals — Mohammed Usmani Ikram, Asif Ali and Sher Ali Keshwani — convicted in cases booked under the Foreigners Act, Passport Act and Official Secrets Act are lodged in Cherlapally and Chanchalguda prisons.
There are three prisoners from Tanzania, two each from Uganda, Yemen and Zambia, one each from Ghana and Somalia who are spending their term in city prisons.
There are currently 7,822 accused and convicts lodged in Telangana prisons, including 2,336 prisoners in Cherlapally, 1,637 in Chanchalguda and 301 inmates in Special Prison for Women.
