A public affairs analyst, Dickson Iroegbu has lamented the proposed upward review of the emoluments of political office holders in the country.
Iregbu says that political office holders in Nigeria are already taking home huge amounts of money to the detriment of the people, arguing that adding more money will further impoverish the country. ‘’People who are already receiving huge, double salaries; who are already taking a lot from the poverty infested people, still want to have increment on their emoluments’’.
The public affairs analyst, who said he was speaking the minds of most Nigerians, explained that it would amount to pushing Nigerians to the wall if proponents of the increase in the emoluments of political office holders insist on actualizing the objective. He proposed adequate wage for civil servants instead of political office holders. ‘’Civil servants should rather be paid adequate wage rather than political office holders. The consequence of the increase in the emoluments of political office holders may lead to increase in terror in Nigeria’’, he said.
Mr. Iroegbu asked Nigerians to take to stand up against the proposal and called for the sack of whoever proposed the idea.
The Revenue Mobilization and Fiscal Commission had said that it was considering an increase in the emoluments of political office holders in the country.
They include the President, governors, members of the National and State Assemblies, Ministers, Local government Chairmen, Councellors as well as Special Advisors, Special Assistants, and Assistants to political office holders.
