No Casualities As Fire Guts Supreme Court

A section of the Supreme Court was on fire on Monday morning, though no casualty was recorded, the court said.

The Public Relations Officer for the Court, Mr Festus Akande, says the cause of the fire was electrical from one of the Chambers of the Justices and was put out with the use of fire extinguishers.

Akande added that the stories making the rounds on social media that there are casualties are “fake news”.

A source who chose to remain anonymous said the fire started around 6 a.m.

It was gathered that the cleaners on duty and some of the workers who resumed early for work detected the fire and raised the alarm.

The workers were said to have used the fire extinguishers in the building to combat the fire.

Three offices, including that of Justice Mohammed Saulawa, were touched by the fire.

The fire incident is just the latest of many that have affected government offices in Abuja.

In May 2023, fire gutted some parts of the Nigerian Air Force Base located along Airport Road in the FCT.

In February 2022, there was a fire incident at ministry of finance building in Abuja.

In May 2020, fire burnt a part of the Nigerian Postal Service (NIPOST) building in the FCT.

A month before that incident, a building housing the office of the accountant-general of the Federation (AGF) was gutted by fire.

In 2018, the Federal Fire Service (FFS) said Nigeria lost about N5 trillion to fire incidents in four years.
