NUJ asks for FG bail out for privately owned media organisations

The Nigerian  Union of Journalists  is appealing to President Muhammadu Buhari to urgently assist privately owned media financially, to avert imminent collapse of the industry.

In a letter to the President, which was made available to signaturetv.org, the President of the Nigeria Union of Journalists, NUJ, Chris Isiguzo, appealed to President Buhari, for financial bailout for the media industry, through the Nigeria Press Council, NPC and the Broadcasting Organizations of Nigeria, BON.

“We’re constrained once again to write this letter to Mr. President, appealing for urgent intervention to save the media industry from collapse.

Media organizations are daily being asphyxiated as a result of the economic downturn occasioned by the COVID-19 pandemic,” the letter read.

The NUJ President noted that there can be no freedom of expression and freedom of the press where journalists work under precarious situations and are exposed to poverty and fear.

The letter which copies were made available to the leadership of the two chambers of the National Assembly, noted that this is a crisis situation of monumental proportion and pleaded for urgent intervention to “avert a catastrophe.”
