POLICE RECRUITMENT IS MERE PATRONAGE DISTRIBUTION – HUSSEIN ABDU
The Country Director of CARE International a non-governmental organization, Dr Hussein Abdu says the Nigeria Police must stop using its recruitment exercises for distribution of patronage.
Dr. Abdu who will be a guest on The Signature Show, an issue-based programme on Africa Independent Television, AIT this Sunday, says making recruitment into the police force patronage to enable interests give jobs to their people creates two problems.
The first is that it becomes a source of conflict between the Police Service Commission,(PSC) and the Police Command, creating avoidable bad blood. The second is that it reduces the quality of the recruits entering the force since competence does not drive the process.
Dr. Hussein Abdu, who called for deeper reform of the Nigeria Police, preferably to be headed by an informed civilian, advised the new Chairman of the Police Service Commission, Solomon Arase, who was an Inspector General of Police to create a bond of understanding with the police authorities to enable the Force to reinvent itself.
The Signature Show airs on AIT every Sunday @2pm.
