Policemen have taken over the premises of the Federal Institute of Industrial Research Oshodi, Lagos.

The Policemen who were said to have arrived in three trucks were said to have stormed the premises to stop the ongoing protest by the workers against the controversial doctorate degree of the acting Director-General of the institute, Chima Igwe.

The workers had been calling for Igwe to step down as DG of the institute while his claim to a doctorate degree is being investigated.

The Acting DG who insists that he has a valid doctorate degree has refused to do so. He has also refused to tender his certificate saying he would only to so when others show their own certificates.

The protesting FIIRO workers have also accused the Minister of Science and Technology, Ogbonnaya Onu, of double standards and supporting the embattled Igwe.

According to Igwe who is under investigation by the Independent Corrupt Practices and other related offences Commission (ICPC), he obtained his PhD from the Universite d’Abomey-Calavi, Benin Republic.

However, officials of the institute have been reported to have said that Igwe started the programme but have not completed it.
