House of Representatives has asked the Federal Government to grant the Bayelsa Airport its operational licence.

Lawmakers want the government to direct the National Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) and Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) to grant the airport its operational licence, while mandating its Committee on Aviation to follow up and ensure compliance.

The motion was sponsored by Deputy Majority Leader Peter Akpatason; Minority leader Ndudi Elumelu; Deputy Minority Leader Tobi Okechukwu; Gideon Gwani, Fred Obua and Preye Oseke.

Elumelu noted that since the airport was completed last February, the NCAA had refused to grant its operational rights and permit a smooth take off.

He said: “To travel to and from Bayelsa, you have to either go to Omaha in Rivers State or Sam Mbakwe Airport in Imo State, which can take about two hours if the road is in good condition. This is completely unnecessary; a waste of time and scarce resources since Bayelsa airport has been completed.”
