Hundreds of women in Rivers state have taken to the streets to protest the continued state of emergency and express their misgivings over the current situation in Rivers State.

The group has therefore called for a review and return of democratically elected institutions and restoration of full democratic rule in the state.

The protesters who were led by Nancy Chidi-Nwankwo under the aegis of Rivers Women Unite Group, called for Justice and Democracy for the citizens.

They maintained that the imposition of the state of emergency is not driven by any genuine threat to national security but clearly a politically motivated maneuver aimed at subjugating the people and undermining constitutional democracy.

They accused the Sole Administrator, Retired Vice Admiral Ibok-Ete Ibas of going far beyond the limited powers of a placeholder and betraying the impartiality expected of his office which they said is a clear indication that the emergency rule was a calculated attempt to grab power under the guise of national interest.

They wondered why the federal authorities in Abuja would choose to descend with the full weight of force on Rivers State while ignoring the dire security emergencies ravaging states such as Borno, Yobe, Zamfara, Kaduna, Plateau, and Benue where terrorists have overrun entire communities and taken control of local governments.
