South East Governors Thursday commended President Muhammadu Buhari for his intervention and commitment to the timely completion of work at the Enugu airport as well as the 2nd Niger bridge.Speaking when he inspected progress of work at the airport Chairman of the South East governors forum Engr. Dave Umahi urged the contractor to maintain Easter deadline which they had given as delivery schedule for the job, stressing that the airport is important to South Easterners and Nigerians.He lauded President Muhammadu Buhari for prompt release of fund for the project as he had promised, for the rehabilitation of the airport runways and terminal building.
“The work is tightly being supervised and I’m quiet impressed with the contractor. The consultants are doing very well. The supervision is going on very well and I think that is why the contractor is doing well.
“We will continue to thank Mr President for the quick release of funds, not only for the airport but for the second Niger Bridge, as well.
He commended PW construction company, the firm handling runway rehabilitation work at the Akanu Ibiam International Airport Enugu, on the level, speed and quality of work done.
“The quality of work, speed of work and the timely release of funds. We are also impressed with the quality of work on the Enugu/Porthacourt Expressway. The quality of work is very good and the speed also very good.
“So the airport construction is being done strictly to specification and their speed is good. And according to the supervisor, they have adviced them to increase the speed and do some other minor works like fencing and drainage which can be done at night.
“The point is not the amount that was approved, the point is the definition of the work to be done. So if the work requires more than 10 billion, it will be done but if it requires less it will still be done. All contracts are mere estimates; demonstration of opinions and wills and when you go the the nitty gritty of the contract, it is a measured work and so the definition of what we asked Mr president has not changed so we are not bothered with what we read in the print media.
“There is a budget for that and when we went to see the president, he assured that in the 2020 budget, funds will be allocated, we have checked and funds were allocated. So when the funds for capital projects are released, I’m sure work will get started”, Umahi said.
They were saying June but consultants have sat down with them and they have given us a feasible timetable, first week of April.
