The Vice Chancellor of the Federal University Dutsinma (FUDMA) in Katsina State, Prof Armaya’u Bichi, has alleged that some of the university’s staff members are serving as informants to bandits.

Bichi, in an interview with DW Hausa on Wednesday, said although contacts of suspected staff members had already been given to a security agency for further investigation, action has not been taken.

According to the university’s Vice Chancellor, the school management has been doing its best to prevent the recurrence of such incidents, however, the situation has been getting worse.

“It’s unfortunate and worrisome that some of our staff (members) are informants to bandits. The suspected staff (members) are within us and have been giving information to bandits to come and attack both the staff and students.

“We have been taking all necessary action but our effort proved abortive.

“Bandits have been penetrating the staff and students’ residential quarters and kidnap them.

“The number one courage of bandits is the informants. And they are living with us here.

“We have informed a security agency about the suspected staff (members) and given them their phone numbers for necessary investigation, but up till now, the head of the security agency has yet to get back to me.

“We have a strong reason for that, though we can’t take laws into our hands”, he insisted.

Bandits have been attacking, kidnapping and killing not only the residents but also, students and staff of the university including their family members in Dutsinma, one of the frontline Local Government Areas in Katsina State.

When contacted, the police spokesman in the state, ASP Abubakar Sadiq, said the Command has not be informed on the issue. He, however, pledged that the police would thoroughly investigate the matter and bring the perpetrators to justice.

He appealed to the residents to assist the Command with relevant information on the activities of bandits and their collaborators to end menacing activities in the state.

“We don’t have information on this issue and we don’t know exactly which particular security the university management contacted.

“We will thoroughly investigate the matter to bring the perpetrators to justice.

“The command under the leadership of CP Abubakar Musa, has been appealing to the residents to assist it with relevant information on the activities of bandits and their collaborators to end banditry,” the police spokesman said.

Recalled that last week Tuesday, a lecturer with the university was killed, while two of his children were abducted by bandits.

The lecturer, simply identified as Dr Tiri Gyan David, was the Head of the Department of Agricultural Economics, Extension, and Rural Development at the university.
