Tanker drivers protest police brutality in Adamawa

Some tanker drivers on Sunday shut the Yola-Jalingo highway following alleged beating of one of them by police operatives.

The drivers used their tankers to block a section of the federal highway in a community near Mayo-Belwa, a town in the southern part of Adamawa State.


The action of the tanker drivers halted traffic along the highway.

A witnesses said the drivers were incensed after one of their colleagues conveying fuel was stopped by policemen and asked to pay for passage.

According to the witness, “When the driver did not heed the demand, the policemen descended on him, beat him to a stupor and tore his clothes.”

He said the people around the area swooped on the policemen, rescued the man and took him to hospital.

Sale Baba, identified as an official of the Tanker Drivers Association, said, “We are tired of the atrocities being perpetuated by the police.”

Police spokesman Sulaiman  Nguroje said their men have been deployed in the area to investigate the incident.
